Principal Perspective

My predecessor, Mr. Joe Hartnett and the current Mentor Ms. Sheila Hanratty became involved in the Induction Pogramme during the pilot phase in September 2008, and from the start it was a huge success. St. Fiacc’s is a school rooted in Community & Christian values and this ethos  is evident when NQTs join the team as each staff member endeavours to support and offer guidance to the graduates as they embark upon their careers.

I try to support the NQTs by listening to their issues and by letting them know that my door is open should they wish to check something out. I frequently chat to their mentor Sheila, who is fantastic for raising concerns and foreseeing any upcoming events or matters that need clarification. She mediates between the NIPT team, the existing staff, and the NQTs beautifully. We plan the calendar of induction activities for the year, and arrange cover to let the experienced teachers, mentor and NQTs work meaningfully together. We have availed of school visits from our Regional Induction Co-ordinator Kathryn Corbett, and the Programme Office is also easily contactable and available for support.  All in all, considering the demands of the probationary year, and indeed possible future changes in this area, I cannot imagine how it would be possible to empower the NQTs to succeed in their first year without the National Induction Programme for Teachers.
