NQT’s Perspective
I have found the NIPT to be invaluable this last year. Having such a supportive staff and mentor has really helped to make this year more manageable. Through the team teaching and observations I was given great suggestions and feedback by my mentor. I really enjoyed the days where we had the chance to observe other class teachers; it was fantastic to see what methods other teachers used. I also found the after school NQT meetings to be very beneficial, there were some great ideas and suggestions given at these classes. These classes also gave me the opportunity to discuss ideas and concerns with other NQT’s. Overall this programme has given me great confidence in my teaching and helped in my professional development. Tanya Mullen, 10/11 NQT |
One of the great values of mentoring is that new teachers have access to people of vast experience covering many years with experience of dealing with curriculum and curriculum changes over a period of time. People who are very efficient in marrying the practical and the theoretical and with years of teaching can foresee problems which young teachers may encounter, saving these NQTs a vast amount of energy, effort and frustration by pointing them in the right direction. Whilst new teachers have a vast amount of theoretical knowledge, teachers who are involved in mentoring have hours of hands on experience in dealing with matters in a practical way. Having support from a mentor is a huge morale booster when spirits are flagging, particularly during the diploma year. It’s great that they can give you a lift based on what they know. John Byrne

I learned a lot from my observations and returned to my own class eager to utilise new ideas and approaches. Overall, I found the mentoring programme very beneficial and consider myself fortunate to have completed my probationary year in a school with this programme. Ms. Clare Cosgrave |

One of the things I found as a stranger coming in to a new school with a large community of teachers, was the warmth, the friendship and the support that I recieved. As a new teacher, the welcome that was afforded me by all the staff in the school made my life pleasant and made the start of my teaching life a great experience.
The probationary year can be quite daunting at first. The preparation and planning, as well as the actual teaching can seem overwhelming. However, during my probationary year, I found the help of our mentor invaluable. It was a great source of comfort to know that there was always a second opinion and a helping hand available. Working with a mentor meant that in times of doubt or confusion, I could turn to someone with a lot more experience and who could offer a fresh perspective. I also found it helpful to meet regularly with the other NQT’s in my school and to discuss the different challenges we were facing. A highlight of the NIPT for me was getting the opportunity to visit the classes of other teachers in the school and to observe them teaching lessons that I found challenging myself.
