Mentor's Perspective
St. Patrick’s N.S. Slane has been part of the Induction Programme for the past three years. As mentor I see my role as a support to all our NQTs – someone whom they can approach with a question, a request or a problem, someone who can make the transition from student to teacher that bit easier. This programme works very well in our school because I have the full support of the class teachers and the principal. Class teachers are always willing to share their expertise and ideas by modelling lessons and supporting NQTs. Liz, our principal, is there to advise and assist me on a day to day basis. The co-operation of all these groups is the secret to the success of the programme in our school. I find the position of mentor rewarding, challenging and quite often I am jealous of the enthusiasm, the energy and the brilliant new ideas of the NQTs. It is a learning experience for everyone!
