There are currently two accredited mentoring courses at primary level available in Ireland. See below for further details.
1. Graduate Certificate/Diploma/MEd in Professional Studies in Education
Mary Immaculate College, Limerick
The Graduate Certificate Professional Studies in Education is a one-year part-time programme providing an academic qualification for teachers in professional studies. It provides an optional progression route to a Graduate Diploma and Master’s Degree in Years 2 and 3. The programme is designed to appeal to a broad range of teachers, including those who wish to:

develop through enquiry, reflection and experimentation with their own school practice, independently and in collaboration with others

deepen their understanding of curriculum as process and leadership for learning

extend their skills and knowledge for teaching in particular subject areas or for carrying out particular roles such as mentoring and curriculum leadership
The Graduate Certificate comprises four modules including one elective. Each module involves three days attendance in MIC together with further work online using Moodle. The course begins on 15 October.
| Module 1: Reflective and professional practice Reflective practice as the basis for professional learning; professional growth and models of CPD; professional development planning. [Onsite attendance: Saturday 15/10, 22/10, 4/11 9:30 to 16:30] Module 2: Teaching, learning and assessment Constructive alignment between teaching, learning and assessment; formative assessment, co-operative learning, differentiation and inclusive practice. [Onsite attendance: Saturday 25/11, 2/12, 9/12 9:30 to 16:30] Module 3: Elective Module Note: Options are offered subject to demand. Not every option will be offered. Option 1: Learning through mentoring Teachers as mentors; stages of teacher development; supporting the professional learning of colleagues, for example NQTs; peer observation and coaching; giving feedback Option 2: Innovation in science teaching Based on constructivist principles and further develops the use of scientific process skills and problem-solving. Option 3: Play and young children’s learning Play as a learning methodology, for example, free play, adult-directed play; using socio-dramatic play for learning in various curriculum areas. Option 4: ICT: teaching and learning using ICT in line with the principles of curriculum design, e.g., interactive whiteboard, internet and other software. Option 5: Tumoideachas, Comhthathú Teanga agus Ábhair An tumoideachas; múineadh ábhair eile trí Ghaeilge; teagasc cumarsáideach teanga; measúnú; (dírithe ar mhúinteorí arb í an Ghaeilge nó an Béarla an príomh teanga teagaisc atá acu araon). Module 4: Collaborative action research A school-based project focused on a particular aspect of practice; review of relevant literature, research design, data collection and analysis; integrating concepts introduced in other modules. |
For those who wish to progress to Year 2, the Graduate Diploma comprises three core modules (focusing on curriculum theory and practice; leadership and learning; teacher research) and an elective module giving additional options in a range of other areas.

2. Certificate/Diploma in Education
(Mentoring Newly Qualified Teachers)
St. Patrick's College
The postgraduate Certificate/Diploma in Education (Mentoring Newly Qualified Teachers) offered in St Patrick's College builds on the structure of the training programme for mentors as part of the National Pilot Project on Teacher Induction. Applications are open to mentors who are currently participating, or have participated
in the NPPTI for at least one year. The programme affords mentors an opportunity to complete postgraduate study (30 ECTS at Level 9) over a two-year period in a part-time capacity.
The programme comprises face-to-face seminars, online engagement and the completion of short assignments. It is modular in structure, requiring four 5-credit modules to achieve the Certificate and a further 10 credits to achieve the full Diploma. The programme is accredited by Dublin City University.
Content of the programme addresses such issues as:
- Theoretical perspectives on mentoring
- Mentoring and identity
- Mentoring and teaching
- Assessment, recording and reporting
- Reflective practice
- Models of mentoring and comparative studies
- Critical issues in mentoring in the Irish context
- Critical inquiry into the mentoring process
